2011 Eggs Awayday

The annual EGGS awayday this year took place at Immingham Golf Club. So 17 Eggs and 6 guests made their way across the Humber Bridge into the shadow of the refineries that are strung along the shore of the Humber. Those using Satnav were taken along a bumpy lane that miraculously ended up at the club house; those that followed instructions kept their low profile tyres intact. The course is pretty flat although like Driffield many of the holes have the up and down characteristics of ancient field patterns which means you get eccentric bounces and lies. Most holes are lined with trees so you have to be pretty straight and you have to take your medicine if you're not. There are also some fairly deep dykes winding their way around the course and if your ball is in one of those, it's almost certainly lost. The greens were quick and true but some are hard to read.

We arrived to a warm welcome from Cathy and Ellen, our hosts for the day, who fuelled us with coffee and bacon sandwiches. The morning competition was a 9 hole Stableford. It was won convincingly by Brian Lamb a guest of his brother Allan who laughed his way to 20 points. He'd been a member here but had not played since January so did pretty well. The best of the EGGS members were Brian Clark and Brian Shaw who both scored 18 points. Most of us were struggling to keep the first ball in play as the average points score for the morning was 14.2.

After a rapid lunch of sandwiches and chips, the groups were re-formed for the afternoon medal over 18 holes. The good weather continued but  good form was harder to find as the day wore on. The winner of the afternoon medal was Brian Shaw with a gross 82 playing off 14; his nett 68 was six strokes ahead of the runner-up Barrie Reuben who made a spirited defence of the Eddie Sharpe trophy he won last year at Stockton Forest. Like many others, Barrie's round hit the buffers at the 17th. This was the hardest hole for us on the day (average 6.9); a relatively short par 4 with a sharp dog leg to the right after a deep ditch that managed to capture many balls. In 3rd place in the overall competition, much to his but not our surprise, was Rob Robinson, one of the rookies at this year's event.

The average gross score in the medal was 102 and the average nett was 12 over the par of 71. Allan Lamb and Roy Simpson each managed a 2 on the the 12th hole and received a sleeve of balls for their accomplishment.

The leader among the guests was again Brian Lamb, chased home by Ben Hardesty who managed the longest drives of the day unfortunately sometimes beyond the point where we EGGS could actually see a ball land.

The day with an excellent three course meal provided by Cathy and Ellen and the presentations when Brian Shaw received the Eddie Sharpe Trophy. As is usual on an EGGS awayday, everyone is a winner and we went away happy.

Many thanks to Barrie Reuben, Roger Day, Geoff Swan and Allan Lamb for their help in organising this year's event.
