The competitions are played off Yellow (Gents) and Red (Ladies) tees. A 3/4 handicap allowance is applied with no maximum. Ladies receive an additional 3 strokes before the 3/4 calculation is made reflecting the 3 strokes difference between the Gents and Ladies CSS values. The best 6 results for each team will determine which 16 teams progress to the knockout phase in February/March.
Sunday 29th January 2012
You could cut the tension with a knife as all pairing new it was their last chance to improve their position on the league table. There was frost in the morning that made it a very difficult day to post a score that would cause a substantial move up the leader board. Unfortunatley even with a closing 62 the very capable pairing of Matthew peacock & Andrew Foster just missed out. Also after spending weeks in a qualifying position Ian Monaghan & Mick Richardson just failed to qualify. The best move of the day was by Steve Garrod & Dan Hammond who last week were in 17th position but leaped to 9th with a 64. Dave Norton & Tim Fordon shot an impressive 62 to move from 19th in the table to 13th. The creator of this years new formatted Winter League Andrew Harper and son Darren Harper just managed to qualify in 16th position after thinking they had blown their chances by carding a 67.
The Golf Club would like to thank everyone who has supported this years competiton to make it the most exciting Winter League in years. Better luck next year to those who did not manage to qualify and good luck to those who did.
Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd January 2012
The penultimate weekend of winter league qualifying was a very very windy one. This wind resulted in two of the hardest days in the qualifying process. The average score on Saturdays stablegord was 36.9 and the average score on Sunday was a massive 73.2. Not much movement at the top of the table apart from a great move by Barry Hall & Kevin Turner for a dodgy 16th position to 12th position. Good luck everyone for Sunday. There will be a few crucial putts on that 18th Green!
Saturday 14th January 2012
Frosty conditions met the early morning golfers and unfortunately temporary greens. This made scoring very difficult with shots bouncing unpredictably. The scoring average was 67.6 so if you beat this you were doing well. The leaders Doug Sharp & James Ward carded a 61 to remarkably only improve their score by 2 shots. The top 16 qualifiers all stay the same from last week.
Sunday 8th January 2012
Very favourable conditions were seen for the first winter league qualifier of the new year. With 41 pairing this was the 3rd largest field we have seen in the qualifying stages and the best scoring average since the 13th November. The best score of the day was again 61 carded by none other than Phil Worthington & Tom Hales, however this still leaves them 1 shot behind the league leaders. The pairings of Ian Westray & Martin Knapp and Steve Birch & Ken Bushnell put in very strong performances, both shooting 62. The ranking table is certainly starting to take shape now as most teams in the top half have played more than the minimum 6 scores required to qualify. These last few weeks are going to be crucial with 22 teams within 10 shots of the last current qualifier.
Saturday 4th December 2011
An icey wind greeted the 32 pairings of winter leaguers on the westwood. However these conditions did not damen their spirits as the scoring average was the best it has been in weeks at 67.2. Notable performers were John Billany & Paul Burnley, Neil Burnley & Dave Jackson and Paul Collins & Dave Verity, all scoring 61 in the tough conditions. Phil Worthington & Tom Hales carded a 63 in their effort to catch the League leaders Doug Sharp & James Ward.
Saturday 17th December and Sunday 18th December 2011
Conditions this past weekend proved to be difficult with the scoring average over par on both days. Saturday's better ball medal was won by S Fox and G Brackenbury with a score of 63 played on the ice course. Sunday's conditions fared the same, on this occasion won by I Goldie and J Blower with a stableford score of 42.
An additional date has been slotted into the calendar, a medal will be played on Saturday 24th December 2011, this is the last winter league qualifier before the break for Christmas and the New Year.
Saturday 11th December and Sunday 12th December 2011
Standing outside the Pro Shop at 7.30 am in a biting wind and near darkness waiting for Alex to turn up, someone said "This is the real thing, isn't it? Proper Winter league." And so it proved this weekend. On Saturday, with some greens a bit frozen, S Ward and C Sheppard, languishing in 53rd place before the weekend, scored 43 points in the Stableford competition and so moved 13 places up the rankings. On Sunday, with a chilling shotgun start at 8.00 am, D Sharp and J Ward strengthened their position at the top of the leaderboard with a nett 62. Their score on the day was matched by M Waterson and C Trevor. The overall leaders are now the top 16 eligible qualifiers but there are some notable teams just a few places below them who have yet to complete their mandatory six matches, so all could yet change.
The 4BBB Medal on Saturday 24th December has been added to the series by popular demand so don't forget to put it in your diary. The next matches are scheduled for 17th and 18th December.
Saturday 3rd December and Sunday 4th December 2011
Matches played on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th December were played in difficult conditions. The winter league competition was combined with the club bottle competition due to the latter's previous cancellation. Saturday's conditions proved to be more testing, victory went to R Reynolds and A North with a score of 62. Sunday's conditions were a little more favourable. The best score of 59 was carded by D Sharp and J Ward, this pairing also move to the top of the leader board with a 6 round total of -46.
There are still nine more opportunities to submit cards before the completion of the league section at the end of January 2012, two of those matches are played this forthcoming weekend with a stableford on Saturday and a medal on Sunday.
Saturday 25th November and Sunday 27th November 2011
This weekend threw up some very tricky playing conditions that made a good score very difficult. Saturdays winter league qualifier saw the second largest entry this year but but was the second worse average scoring day. Although this statistic was altered when Sunday became by far the hardest day of the winter league so far with an average score of 34.1 points. Hopefully next week will bring some easier conditions.
Saturday 12th November and Sunday 13th November 2011
Saturdays Stableford Winter league qualifier attracted the largest entry of the campaign so far, 46 pairs submitted scores on a near perfect November day. The winners P Worthington and T Hales submitted an 11 under score of 47 points, 7 under the scoring average of 40 points.
Sunday's competition was played as a medal and competitors endured much less favourable conditions, however scoring average was on a par with the previous day. The leading score was carded by the pairing of J Clark and G Hill who managed their second round of 59.
Sunday 29th October
39 pairings entered the 6th round of the Winter League qualification but no team played in all matches so no team is yet eligible to qualify for the next stage of the competition. The leading score this week was from D Sharp and J Ward with a net 10 under score of 59. There are no qualifying matches for the winter league this forthcoming weekend, which makes way for the Turkey competition played over both days of the weekend.
Saturday 22nd October and Sunday 23rd October 2011
This weekend saw two competitions played which were both well supported. Saturday was played as a Stableford format alongside the club competition. Good rounds of 8 under par, 44 points from B Youlton and his partner T Parkinson, and B Hall and K Turner set the pace in breezy conditions.
Sunday's competition was played as a medal, scoring was low with the pairings of J Robinson and J Lambert, and J Clark and G Hill carding excellent scores of 59. This helped J Robinson and J Lambert move to the top of the leader board with a combined score of -28 having submitted 4 results. Only one pairing has played all of the 5 matches to this point showing total commitment to the cause, you know who you are!
16th October 2011
This Sunday saw the first Stableford competition in the qualifying series. Hales and Worthington are still leading with -16 but the chasing pack is now much closer with ten teams within five shots of the leaders. The joint best scorers from the 39 teams entered on Sunday were D Sharp and J Ward, and G Lamb and R Jennison with both teams returning 45 points in their first and only match so far. 71 teams have now submitted a score in the series.
8th October 2011
33 pairs played in the second round of the competition on a wet day not particularly conducive to low scoring. The leading scorers coming in at a nett 8 shots under par were the gents team of C Berry and C Lamplugh. Worthington and Hales who led last week came in 2nd and have stretched their overall lead to 5 shots and the rest of the field is already in danger of being left trailing in their wake. The average nett score for the day was 69.5, five and a half shots higher than the week before. 53 of the entered teams have now submitted a score.
2nd October 2011
30 pairs played in the first round of the competition on a fine day for low-scoring golf. The leading scorers coming in at a nett 9 shots under par were the ladies team of A Rusted and L Wood and the gents teams of P Worthington and T Hales. The average nett score for the day was 64.
