Captain’s Drive-in 2012
Angela Holand and Brendan O’Connor held their Captains Drive-in on Sunday 15th January. 30 teams of 4 players started a shotgun Ambrose at 8.30am. 2 teams started on holes 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 14, 15 and 18. We had another hard frost so it was winter greens all the way. Every team had either Angela or Brendan drive for them off the lady’s first tee. The choice of club to drive off the first tee was picked using a pack of cards. When teams left the 18th green, Alan, June and Denise fed everyone hot bacon or sausage baps and a mug tea or coffee. Most Ambrose’s are won with a score of about 51/52, but winter greens made shots to the green and most puts something of a lottery. Ada and Tommy Hood with Dave and Andrew Blanchard won by 0.1 shot with a score of 54.4. 1st: Ada Hood, Tommy Hood, Dave Blanchard, Andrew Blanchard 54.4 shots – prize of 12 of the best golf balls each 2nd: John Sewell, Malcolm Wesslerby, Colin Locker, Ray Foley 54.5 shots - prize of 12 very good golf balls each 3rd: Chris Trevor, Mark Waterson, Frank Billany, John Billany 55.6 shots - prize of 12 simply good golf balls each Most players were good enough to come back to the club house for the prize giving and raffle. Everyone bought a £1 raffle ticket and we raffled a £50 note attached to a tin of Carlsberg Special Brew which belonged to Gary Church who died on Christmas Eve. Many golfers knew Gary and had some "tales" about this one-off character. The lucky winner was Gary Lamb. Just over £200 was collected for the Cherry Tree Community Centre which is Angela’s and Brendan’s chosen charity.
It was great to see so many members and their smiling faces at this inaugural event of the lady’s and men’s captains’ year.
